Evolved by Nature is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior/Principal Analytical and Materials Scientist to support the analysis and characterization of novel silk protein compositions. In this role, you will play a key hands-on technical role in developing, executing, and optimizing analytical methods to characterize silk proteins and derivative materials for a broad range of applications.
The Senior/Principal Materials Scientist will contribute directly to routine and advanced analytical testing, method development, and qualification activities, supporting new ingredient and new product development across multiple business units.
Responsibilities:
· Independently plan, troubleshoot and execute analytical method development, including in-process, intermediate, and final test methods to support product and process specifications and reliable, reproducible results
· Perform routine and non-routine analytical testing in support of research, development, and manufacturing needs
· Conduct thermal, mechanical, and surface characterization using instruments such as DSC, TGA, DMA, Instron, and goniometer
· Lead and conduct chemical, structural, and morphological analyses using HPLC, GC, LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, UV-Vis, FTIR, SEM, and wet chemistry techniques
· Prepare samples and execute LC/MS TOF analyses of intact proteins, fragments, peptides, small molecules, and crosslinking products
· Analyze, interpret, and summarize complex data sets to identify trends, patterns, and actionable insights.
· Support qualification, validation, and transfer of analytical methods across teams and business units.
· Contribute to new ingredient development and new product development projects through analytical insight and experimental execution
Required Qualifications
- MS or PhD in Material Science, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering, with 5+ years industry experience in analytical method development and materials characterization, OR
- BS in one of the above disciplines with 10+ years industry experience
- Strong hands-on experience with analytical instrumentation and wet chemistry techniques.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong organizational abilities.
· Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project timelines.
· Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within cross-functional teams.
Skills & Abilities:
· Expertise in thermal analysis and interpretation of materials behavior
· Experience with HPLC MALS/QELS.
· Experience with LC/MS TOF, including sample preparation and analysis of proteins, peptides, small molecules, and crosslinking products.
· Proficiency in standard protein biochemistry/biophysical techniques.
· Working knowledge of computational tools, including Python programming (AI-assisted acceptable), Jupyter Notebooks, SQL databases, and applied statistics/data analysis, with a strong desire to expand computational capabilities within the organization.
· Strong reporting, data visualization, and analytical communication skills.
· Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability in a fast-paced R&D environment.
· Ability to communicate scientific concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred Experience
· Experience with Design of Experiments (DoE) and Bayesian optimization.
· Experience with assay development.
