The Evolved By Nature Applications team is looking for a Senior Scientist/Principal Scientist, Applications (Personal Care) to serve as a technical steward to further the commercial use of Evolved By Nature ingredients. The individual will develop skincare, haircare and body care formulations for the personal care industry, train formulators at channel partner locations such as CMO’s and distributors, and provide remote technical support on the use of Evolved By Nature ingredients. The role blends deep formulation science, hands-on laboratory innovation, and customer-facing technical leadership. In addition, the Senior Scientist/Principal Scientist will support future ingredient development as required and will execute new product development activities from prototype through product launch, coordinating both internal and external studies to support product claims substantiation, managing project deliverables, and upholding project timelines. The Senior Scientist/Principal Scientist will report to the Engineering Fellow, Applications.

Responsibilities:

• Become familiar with Evolved By Nature’s proprietary biomaterials platform and articulate its material science, performance advantages, and formulation implications to external partners on technical calls and in-person meetings
• Rapidly innovate effective skin, hair and body care formulations incorporating Activated Silk™ peptides to meet customer and marketing briefs
• Build strong, collaborative relationships with external partners (brands, contract manufacturers, formulators, etc) to help advance the use of Activated Silk technology in Personal Care
• Provide technical support to customers and external formulators, including product training, troubleshooting and scale-up guidance.
• Create, test, and optimize new recipes for chassis formulas for skin, hair, and body care products, developing a library of formulations that can be modified to meet desired claims, texture, stability, and efficacy
• Design, execute, document, and/or oversee study plans and product validations
• Coordinate and/or conduct hands-on product testing on lab batches, finished goods, prototype formulas and raw materials, such as QC checks, stability testing and sample evaluations
• Generate and/or review product development documents (e.g., Raw Material Qualification forms, Design transfer documents, Manufacturing Procedures, Stability studies summaries and SOPs)
• Maintain accurate, detailed records of raw materials, formula iterations, and testing results. Generate reports and presentations in a timely manner
• Contribute to successful resolution of technical issues when they arise
• Provide technical expertise and support as needed for other business units
• Travel domestically (25 – 50% of time) to customer sites for training and troubleshooting

Qualifications:

• MS or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Material Science, with 5+ years industry experience, OR
• BS in one of the above disciplines with 10+ years industry experience
• Strong technical foundation in formulated products including emulsions, surfactants, suspensions, structured liquids, and an understanding of material chemistry

Skills & Abilities:

• Deep understanding of personal care formulation science and product architecture
• Demonstrated experience training others in lab techniques and formulation best practices
• Demonstrated experience providing technical support to multiple external partners at once
• Ability to work independently to plan, develop, execute and troubleshoot in support of projects
• Extensive technical knowledge of chemistry, polymers, colorants, emulsions, surfactants, rheology modifiers and active ingredients
• Demonstrated experience with product development, product launches and/or stage gate process.
• Advanced reporting, designing and data analytic skills
• Excellent problem-solving abilities, ability to adapt to change and grasp new concepts and techniques quickly
• Ability to communicate scientific concepts to experts and non-experts across the organization and external customers
• Familiar with Good Laboratory Practices and Good Documentation Practices
• Ability to extract key facts from complex information and present concise summaries to management
• Comfort working under pressure with tight timelines
